‘Skeem Saam’ Actor Skhumbuzo Mbatha Arrested for Drunk Driving
Actor and radio personality Skhumbuzo Mbatha, best known for his role as Meneer Manaka on *Skeem Saam*, was arrested over the weekend for driving under the influence of alcohol in Johannesburg. The incident occurred on Saturday, 8 March 2025, during a Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) roadblock.
### Details of the Arrest
Mbatha was stopped by JMPD officers at a roadblock between Barry Hertzog Avenue and Napier Road in Parktown. Officers reported a strong smell of alcohol emanating from his white Nissan Navara. After consenting to a breathalyser test, Mbatha was found to have exceeded the legal alcohol limit of 0.51 mg/l.
Following the test, officers drew a blood sample as part of standard procedure and subsequently handed Mbatha over to the South African Police Service (SAPS) at the Parkwood police station. He was charged with drunk driving and spent the night in custody.
### Court Appearance and Bail
Mbatha was released on Sunday morning after posting R1,500 bail. He is expected to make his first court appearance later this week to answer to the charges.
Attempts to reach Mbatha for comment were unsuccessful, as he did not respond to calls or WhatsApp messages. Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi also declined to confirm or deny the arrest, citing a lack of access to the SAPS system at the time.
### Previous Legal Troubles
This is not Mbatha’s first encounter with the law. In 2020, he was wrongfully arrested after giving a mysterious woman a lift home. Additionally, in 2021, Mbatha was allegedly scammed out of R15,000 by a close friend, Buti Mthembu, in a failed mining deal.
